The other night at dinner Redding asked Andrew if they could check out the Pocket Frogs after dinner. This is a game Andrew has on his iPad. Andrew replied that they could, but that Redding would need to get his pajamas on first, as usual.

Redding then went on what I’d have to call a tirade, “Why do I have to get my pajamas on, it’s a waste of my time. Why do you have to waste my time? Nobody gets to waste my time. I am the only one who gets to waste my time.” The child is, still, four years old.

Apparently there were a lot of conversations about wasting time at camp this week. After much suppressed laughter, we managed to convey to him that doing what Dad and Mom ask him to do is never a waste of time.

But seriously, the conviction with which he spoke these words… I nearly keeled over.

She’s tall enough to pass for much older. Tall enough to ride roller coasters, and she loves them.
Yesterday she was busy exercising her sassy attitude, which is seldom appreciated by her parents. I asked her to go to her room and when I went up to chat with her about her attitude, she informed me, “I’m too big for time outs.”
“You probably are,” I said, “but I don’t think you’ll like the alternative. Because once you are truly too big for time outs, then I’ll have to start taking away privileges when you make bad choices.”
“Like what?” Annabella nearly whispered, looking at me like I’d threatened her very existence.
“Like your Leapster, movies or your computer time.” It is so hard to maintain the level of earnestness required for these discussions.
“But Mom,” Annabella piped up, “what if you get really mad and take away my refreshments, along with my beverages?”
